Josh finishing the Arkansas 100 Miler. 10-7-2018
With Family bringing him home the last 100 yards.

The Arkansas Traveller is one of the oldest 100 miles races there is, already having 27 runnings. What makes the AT100 so unique among the many ultras today is the combination of volunteer support from many in the running community and beyond, the beautiful scenery of the Ouachita Trail and Forest Service roads, and the sneaky-hard runnable hills that will challenge you from beginning to end.

The Swilcan Bridge on The Old Course in St. Andrews
It's not a particularly imposing bridge, the old stone bridge over the Swilcan Burn on The Old Course in St.
Andrews, Scotland. But the Swilcan Bridge on The Old Course's 18th hole is one of the most famous golf course landmarks in the world.
Everyone who crosses it stops to have his or her photo taken, even the pros. How old is the Swilcan Bridge?
Nobody is really sure of the arch's age, but estimates are from 700 to 800 years old.

Softball: VB senior Scherrey exceeding expectations
Fort Smith Times Record 5-9-2018

Natalie Scherrey has exceeded expectations.

Not only for herself but also for her team.

A year ago, the Van Buren senior center fielder hit just .217. But in the latter part of that season, Scherrey made a hitting adjustment and began doing a better job of hitting.

That has carried over to this season. Scherrey currently leads the Lady Pointers in hitting with a .402 average.

She also leads in on-base percentage with .495 and also has a .519 average with runners in scoring position, also tops on the squad.

On Monday, Scherrey went 3-for-4 — her second three-hit game for the season — as the Lady Pointers closed out the regular season with a 7-0 win at Rogers Heritage in 7A-West play.

"Really, this year I just focused on being confident in myself and knowing my abilities on what I can do and trying to focus on those," Scherrey said.

"(Monday's) game was just a tribute to that mentality, just knowing I can do it and knowing I can win every at-bat and really having that confidence and belief in myself to do it."

What Scherrey did was shift from being a right-handed slap hitter to batting from the left side.

"Last year (after the switch), my batting average went from like .200 on the right side to like .300 on the left side, so that was like a small testament of what I might be able to achieve on the left side," Scherrey said. "Then this year, I feel like it showed that risk-taking, it was worth it.

"It was worth it for the team, it was worth it for my coaches to let me try it out, it was worth it to me to spend all that time in practice to completely switch over, and then this year, I couldn't be any more prouder and blessed and excited that I got that opportunity to do that. Especially my senior year to finish off this well is great."

Scherrey also gives Van Buren an unusual one-two punch of left-handed hitters at the top of the lineup. She bats second in the order behind fellow senior and left-handed hitter Caroline Davis, who is batting .307.

"We like those two at the top; we feel like one of them's going to get on base and that's been the case most of the season; one usually gets on base," Van Buren coach Andy Williams said. "(Against Heritage) we got both of them on base.

"If Caroline gets on, I told Natalie the bottom line is somehow (Davis) gets to second, and (Scherrey) does a good job of putting the ball in play and a lot of times getting a base hit. But if one of them gets on base, it's kind of our philosophy with those two and then let the meat of the lineup try to drive them in."

Scherrey said that she enjoys her role in the Lady Pointer lineup, batting second.

"Honestly, I love being in that position," Scherrey said. "Lead-off is great, but for me I feel like I always work better and do better when I have a little bit of pressure put on me, and so Caroline kind of starting it off and getting on base leaves me a lot of room to just do my thing and work with her."

Monday's win at Heritage also continued Van Buren's hot streak of late.

The Lady Pointers have now won four straight games, and with Monday's win, gave them the No. 4 seed from the 7A-West as the 7A State Tournament starts Thursday in Cabot.

That win streak came on the heels of a five-game losing streak, which gave Van Buren (15-11, 7-7) a 3-7 conference record. But Scherrey said she had faith the team would bounce back.

"Honestly this season, I just knew it was going to be kind of a win some, lose some season," she said. "When we were (3-7 in conference), I had total confidence that we would come back, being in the position that we were and the teams we were going to face, I knew that we would come back because we had teams that we had beat earlier on. ... Honestly, I was completely confident but I'm even more proud with what we've done this year.

"Out of my expectations, we exceeded them. Our whole team did way better than I think anyone was thinking that we would."

Scherrey, a four-year starter for the Lady Pointers who has signed to play at Ranger Junior College in Texas, is now ready for another trip to state. Which means another encounter with a nearby foe.

Van Buren will be playing Southside for the fourth consecutive season at state when the two face off at 3 p.m. Thursday in an opening-round game at Cabot.

The Lady Pointers eliminated Southside in Scherrey's freshman and junior seasons, while Southside won two years ago when Scherrey was a sophomore. Van Buren also beat Southside earlier this season.

Clark Lammert Named Big 12 Male Sportsperson of the Year

The awards keep rolling in for Red Raiders, as former Texas Tech men’s basketball player Clark Lammert was named as the Big 12 Male Sportsperson of the Year on Thursday in Irving, Texas.

This award began in 2000-2001 and has become an annual award since, as a way to recognize student-athletes who go above and beyond their athletic expectations, by demonstrating sportsmanship, excelling academically, and participating in community services.

Former Texas Tech Lady Raider basketball player Natalie Richie won the award in 2001-02, making Lammert just the second to don the scarlet and black to earn the honor.

The San Antonio, Texas native has has had a stellar career, both on and off the court. And Lammert’s accolades in the classroom earned him 2014-15 Academic All Big 12 First Team honors, in addition to being named to the President’s and Dean’s Lists, plus several Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Rolls in his career at Texas Tech.

Off the court, Lammert was focused on community betterment and founded the Red Raider Reach Program, where he was the founder and coordinator. The program was created to help increase Texas Tech student-athletes’ involvement in children’s hospitals in the Lubbock and surrounding areas. And just this past year alone, Texas Tech student-athletes put in over 500 community service hours due largely to the Red Raider Reach Program.

His efforts in the community also earned him a nomination to the All-State “Good Works Team” for this past season.

Lammert — who was also the recipient of the 2014-15 Texas Tech Athletics Good Citizen Award — was a member of the Texas Tech Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, where he is currently serving as the Director of Community Engagement.

Lammert is working on his masters in Sports Management, and after graduation in December, he plans to be a congressional intern in Washington D.C., where he has already been selected.

The Arkansas Traveler 100 endurance race with a 30 hour time limit.

Josh finished it and under 30 hours.

The Arkansas Traveler 100 is an epic 100-mile endurance race through the Ouachita National Forest. The race has been a landmark and favorite in the ultra running community for years and the first race was held in 1991.

The start, finish, and race festivities were at Camp Ouachita, which is around 30 miles west of Little Rock and adjacent to the Lake Sylvia recreation area. Camp Ouachita was a Girl Scout camp built in the 1930’s and is the only surviving G.S. camp built jointly by the Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration.

Is this run for you? If you like constant rocks, trails, and hills, no. Otherwise, yes.

Ron and Steve's Fishing Tournament

Well, the big bass classic is over, and no money for 08.  I did manage to hook one about 3-4 foot long, but it escaped despite all my heroic efforts to land it.  It was a rather intellectually impaired beast, as it chased my boat, and my other frog dangling off the edge of the Mighty Ranger after breaking my 60 pound test spiderwire, as if it were a whisper of silk, taking with it my Wiggle Wog.   The photo attached is a picture taken as I bravely held my camera phone, 1 foot from the beasts mouth, as it savagely attempted to devour both my hand and my phone.  Due to constant urging of my partner Steve, (who was cowering on top of my motor in mortal fear, I might add), we left the area due to this savage reptiles aggressive behavior, and Steves fear I might attempt to net it and bring it in the boat.  (This thought did cross my mind, but my sense of reasoning finally prevailed).  The demon of the deep finally expelled my Wiggle Wog from its death like vise, and all was right in Post Lake.  All except me being short one frog bait.  There's always next year.

Liz Hamm & Wayland Parker caught this Spoonbill catfish at Lock & Dam 13........Spoonbill catfish, also known as the paddle fish, is one of most ancient fish around. They are also one of the oddest looking fish species. Spoonbill catfish are not actually catfish at all as the name implies. Spoonbill Catfish were once endangered but are making a comeback. Spoonbill catfish or paddlefish may have been around for at least 300 million years. Adult spoonbill catfish grow to seven feet long and can weigh as 200 pounds. Spoonbill catfish are plankton eaters, they filter zooplankton (microscopic animal life) from fresh waters. To do this Spoonbill catfish swim with their mouths open.
